Central & Eastern Europe Session

HPV research in Central and Eastern Europe:
Great success with scarce resources

Friday, February 12
8.00 - 9.30

Central and Eastern Europe bears a disproportionately high burden of cervical cancer incidence and mortality compared with the rest of Europe. Although the region has historically struggled to implement HPV vaccination and organized HPV-based screening programs, recent progress in several countries is encouraging.

In contrast, regional treatment modalities and clinical management for cervical cancer and high-grade lesions are closely aligned with Western standards, although limited financial resources remain a major obstacle. Additionally, the region’s long-standing, yet often overlooked, history of high-quality HPV research deserves recognition.

This workshop will present country-specific examples of outstanding HPV research conducted despite very limited resources, spanning from basic HPV science to virological, epidemiological, and clinical studies, as well as highly successful implementation projects and programs.
